Apple Reference Image gives iPhone photos verifiable evidence that they came from a physical camera, offering a new defense against convincing AI-generated images.

Apple Reference ImageThe opt-in feature records provenance information when a user takes a photo in the Camera app’s new Reference mode. A Reference badge then lets the user authenticate the image afterward.
Apple Reference Image first appeared in beta code in August. The discovery showed that users would need to enable the feature in Settings before taking pictures intended for authentication.
The verification process sends the photo, sensor signatures, capture timeframe, and hardware identifiers to Private Cloud Compute. Apple receives sensor information, a cryptographic hash, and the authentication result, but not the raw image processed by the system.
