In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said these MacBook Pro models will look similar to the current models but weigh less and feature a Dynamic Island instead of a notch at the top of the screen. He previously reported that the laptops will be powered by Apple’s existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips released back in March.
With a costlier OLED display, the new MacBook Pro models are expected to be more expensive. In the U.S., pricing for the existing models with mini-LED displays and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips starts at $2,499 for the 14-inch model and at $2,999 for the 16-inch model, and starting prices for the new models could be up to $500 higher.
macOS Golden Gate is said to feature a “dynamic interface” for touch input.
“The system will take previous interactions into account, presenting controls based on whether someone has been touching the display or using the trackpad,” explained Gurman. “Touching a button can also bring up a menu around the user’s finger, while the Dock and Menu Bar have been optimized for touch.”
Apple will position touch as an additional input method that customers can use when it makes sense, alongside the keyboard and trackpad, he said.
The existing MacBook Pro models with mini-LED displays will remain part of Apple’s lineup for now, but they will eventually be discontinued, he added.
