Image Playground gets realistic AI image generation in iOS 27

Apple added native photorealistic image generation to Image Playground at WWDC 2026, bringing photo-realistic AI-created images to the app for the first time as part of iOS 27.

The updated Image Playground can generate realistic images directly from text prompts. Users can also continue creating images in the app’s existing Animation, Illustration, and Sketch styles.

Apple announced the changes during its WWDC keynote as part of a broader Apple Intelligence update for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

The addition closes a notable gap between Image Playground and competing AI image generators. Tools from OpenAI, Google, and other companies have increasingly focused on photorealistic output.
